Saturn on September 17, 2017, imaged remotely with the 1-meter Chilescope by Damian Peach and the Chilescope team. About 100 times the size of Orion Nebula, 30 Doradus is the largest star-forming region in the Local Group of galaxies, and so luminous that if it were as close to us as the Orion Nebula is (about 1,300 light-years), it would cast shadows. It’s a massive star nursery, much like the Orion Nebula (M42), but on an entirely different scale. Named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who spotted them in 1519 while circumnavigating the globe for the first time, the LMC contains the Tarantula Nebula, also called 30 Doradus. These two galaxies offer up dense star fields ideal for sweeping binoculars. Many astronomers travel specifically to see the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC and LMC), the largest dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way’s retinue. If you make it to clear, dark skies and let your eyes adjust, the sight of two unexpected clouds might surprise you. ![]() Limatola / INAF-Capodimonte Observatory Milky Way’s Largest Satellites Now that you've seen the brightest globular cluster in the Milky Way, find the second brightest - 47 Tucanae (NGC 104) - which is highest in the sky from October through February.Ī view of the iconic Omega Centauri globular cluster.ĮSO / INAF-VST / OmegaCAM Acknowledgement: A. Found deep in the constellation of Centaurus, Omega Centauri looks like a blob almost as large as the full Moon in dark skies, and appears as a speckled glow in amateur telescopes. Because of its distinct properties, astronomers think it might be the nucleus of a dwarf galaxy that long ago collided with the Milky Way. It’s the most massive and most luminous globular cluster visible from anywhere on the planet. Most easily seen from April through September, Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) contains 10 million stars and possibly even a black hole at its center. If you never tire of glimpsing the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye under dark country skies from the Northern Hemisphere, you'll love seeing a 13 billion-year old globular cluster with zero equipment. This 20-arcminute field of view shows the Jewel Box star cluster. You might also see it north of the equator: If you're at latitude 29°N at most (think Texas or northern Florida), Alpha Centauri can sometimes be visible a few degrees above the southern horizon in May. All three stars appear as a single point to the naked eye, but a 3-inch telescope with 100× magnification can split Alpha Centauri A and B.Īlpha Centauri is circumpolar, so it’s visible year-round south of the equator, but it’s at its highest from March to September. It's more than one star - Alpha Centauri A, a Sun-like star, and its companion, the slightly less massive Alpha Centauri B, actually form a triple with Proxima Centauri (technically the nearest at just 4.22 light-years). The third brightest star in the night sky, Alpha Centauri is just 4.37 light-years away. One reason to visit the Southern Hemisphere is to see the star system closest to us. Here's a helpful tip: Take Sky & Telescope's 30°S planisphere with you in your travels to help you identify constellations. To southerners, it's a near-constant companion of Sirius, seen from October through May. Around 35° from Sirius is the second brightest star, Canopus, the Great Star of the South. Low on the northern horizon in the southern hemisphere summer, Orion's sword points up toward Rigel, while brilliant Sirius is overhead at zenith. The North Star, Polaris, isn’t visible and the circumpolar northern constellations, such as the Big Dipper, Cassiopeia, Draco, and Cepheus become seasonal.įinding the constellations and asterisms you thought you knew so well can be difficult: The Summer Triangle becomes the Winter Triangle down south, with Altair on top, and Deneb and Vega sinking as the night wears on. The first thing you'll notice after dusk south of the equator is that the northern constellations appear upside down. Here are a few reasons why you should visit southerly latitudes at least once in your life. You’ll see arguably some of the greatest celestial sights: the nearest stars to our solar system, two close dwarf galaxies, and some drop-dead gorgeous clusters. Yet the southern sky is disorientating, surprising, and utterly transfixing - well worth the trip if you can make it. Visiting the Southern Hemisphere just to go stargazing isn’t something most of us have the resources to do very often. If you regularly spend time with the night sky in the Northern Hemisphere but you've never travelled south of the equator, you only know half the story. ![]()

Ghost note drumming is a distinguishing feature of R&B music. much softer than surrounding notes: (note head in square brackets)Įxamples can be heard in the drumming of Harvey Mason, Mike Clark, Bernard Purdie, Brad Wilk, David Garibaldi, and Chad Smith.significantly softer than surrounding notes: ( ) (note head in parentheses).slightly softer than surrounding notes: ◡ (breve).Percussion music in particular makes use of anti-accent marks, as follows: Moreover, there exists a set of anti-accent marks to show gradation more specifically. The term ghost note, then, can have various meanings. This produces a subtle 16th-note feel around a strong back beat or certain accents." According to The Drummer's Bible: How to Play Every Drum Style from Afro-Cuban to Zydeco, the purpose of a ghost note is to ".be heard under the main sound of the groove. In musical notation, ghost notes are indicated in parenthesis surrounding the note. ![]() In drumming, a ghost note is played at very low volume, typically on a snare drum. In other words, while a grace note could be ghosted, the ghosting of notes is a function of volume rather than of duration.ĭrumming: Ghost notes indicated by parentheses, main notes distinguished by accents play ( help A grace note is by definition decidedly shorter in length than the principal note which it 'graces', but in many examples the grace note receives a greater degree of accentuation (emphasis) than the principal itself, even though it is a much shorter note than the principal. However, in such a case as that the ghost notes were clearly audible, while being far less prominent than the unaccented notes which represent the mean degree of emphasis within the example, then a percussionist could be said to create what we might define as ghost notes.Ī frequent misconception is that grace notes and ghost notes are synonymous. Wind instruments, including the human voice, and guitars are examples of instruments generally capable of ghosting notes without making them synonymous with rests, while a pianist or percussionist would have more difficulty in creating this distinction because of the percussive nature of the instruments, which hampers the resolution of the volume gradient as one approaches silence. This can be a very fine distinction, and the ability of an instrumentalist to differentiate between what is a ghost note and what is a rest is governed largely by the acoustic nature of the instrument. In a case in which a ghost note is deemphasized to the point of silence, that note then represents a rhythmic placeholder in much the same way as does a rest. If one further deemphasizes one of these unaccented notes to the same or a similar extent to which the accented notes in the pattern are emphasized, then one has 'ghosted' that note. The unaccented notes in such a pattern as a clave are considered to represent the mean level of emphasis-they are neither absolutely emphasized nor unemphasized. Ghost notes are not simply the unaccented notes in a pattern. In vocal music, this style of notation represents words that are spoken in rhythm rather than sung. Ghost notes are often used by electric bass players and double bass players in a range of popular music and traditional music styles. In popular music drumming, ghost notes are ones played "very softly between the 'main' notes," (off the beat on the sixteenth notes) most often on the snare drum in a drum kit. There is a pitch, to be sure, but its musical value is more rhythmic than melodic or harmonic.they add momentum and drive to any bass line." Occurring in a rhythmic figure, they are purposely deemphasized, often to the point of near silence. "Muted to the point where it is more percussive sounding than obvious and clear in pitch. On stringed instruments, this is played by sounding a muted string. It should not be confused with the X-shaped notation ( ) that raises a note to a double sharp. In musical notation, this is represented by an "X" for a note head instead of an oval, or parentheses around the note head. In music, a ghost note (or a dead, muted, silenced or false note) is a musical note with a rhythmic value, but no discernible pitch when played. Deep-sea animals thus reflect the importance of biochemical adaptations in establishing species distribution patterns and appropriate rates of metabolic turnover in different ecosystems. The oceans are home to several species of aquatic animals who have adapted to life deep underwater, compensating for the pressure of great depths and finding prey in the darkness. If someone is looking for an idea for a movie monster IMHO they should begin by looking at deep sea creatures. Reduced light and food availability in bathypelagic regions select for low rates of energy expenditure in locomotory activity. Deep sea creatures are very interesting and often creepy looking. The low metabolic rates of bathypelagic fishes correlate with greatly reduced capacities for ATP turnover in locomotory muscle. Animals from the warmest habitable regions of hydrothermal vent ecosystems have enzymes and mitochondria adapted to high pressure and relatively high temperatures. ![]() The abilities of deep-sea animals to tolerate the pressure and temperature conditions of deep-sea habitats are due to pervasive adaptations at the biochemical level: enzymes exhibit reduced perturbation of function by pressure, membranes have fluidities adapted to deep-sea pressures and temperatures, and proteins show enhanced structural stability relative to homologous proteins from cold-adapted shallow-living species. So, here we are listing the top 20 most terrifying deep-sea creatures.
